Incredibly close racing at Mosport yields a Sport Bike 600 win for Chris Peris, as well as two additional podium finishes within one second of the winner!

The first double header week end of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship 2008 season took place over mixed conditions at the world famous high-speed track just East of Toronto. Intermittent rain played havoc with Sunday racing, and coincidentally produced the closest racing seen in Canada in years, in both Superbike and Sport Bike 600 classes. Three of the four races were determined by packs of racers criss-crossing each other over the last 100 meters to the checked flag.

Team Suzuki / Blackfoot / Picotte Racing figured prominently in every battle, with Chris Peris winning the Sunday Sport Bike 600 race by a comfortable 2.75 sec. after 14 hard laps, as well as ending up third in the Saturday 600 race, by 0.316 sec. Francis Martin was third in the Saturday Superbike race, 0.460 sec behind the winner, and fifth on Sunday, 0.995 behind at the end. Young Mat McBride was unlucky, with mechanical issues and on-track incidents pushing him down in the results.

Team Principal Pascal Picotte was satisfied with the progress of the team over the long week end. “We really started to come together as three rider teams communicating and working more effectively together, and the results showed this despite mixed racing luck. We went back to 2007 settings for Francis Martin and he was more comfortable and aggressive right away. Mat McBride and his team, led by Dale Rathwell, got both their bike right on the race pace, with a front row starting sport in Superbike and fifth on the 600 grid. He seemed to get a little nervous in each race as he realised that he was aboard winning machines and it was up to him to deliver in a pressure-filled environment. He is quick and getting better every time out, and I am looking for a win from him later this year.”

Fast man Chris Peris has a frantic week end, fighting in the lead pack in all four races. “This was the best racing I have seen in a long time, in Canada or the rest of the world. Four or five guys were always fighting for the lead, and this was the most fun I have had (on the track) in a long time. The Saturday 600 race started well for me, with a good set up and the qualifying lap record. I was planning my move on the final lap, to slip by everyone up the straight and hang on to the flag, but missed a shift coming on to the straight. This killed my drive, and I ended up third at the finish”.

For the Sunday 600 race, the team made extensive changes to the bike and Chris took the start with an untried machine, a very different one from Saturday. “We all took a gamble and it worked. From fifth on the first lap, I went through the pack and won by almost 3 seconds. Give me more like that!”

In Superbike, Chris was slowed by an electrical problem in the Super Pole and qualified ninth for both races. “I had a good start in the Saturday race and got up to the lead pack with 6 laps to go. I was preparing my last lap charge when a lapped rider got in my way and forced me way off the line, and down to 5th at the end. Sunday, I was 6th after one lap and was fourth when the race was stopped. “I ran out of time, as the bike was a winner and I know I had the win in the bag if the race had run full length. Heck, I fell on the last lap and we still came in fifth!”

Chris knows and likes Shubenacadie, where the next round will take place. “I am looking for two wins there – no problems!”

Francis Martin saw a return to his former aggressive self, back at a track and on bike set ups that he knows and likes. “I got a good start in the Saturday Superbike race, and I was hungry for the win. After staying in the lead pack throughout the race, I was happy to be third and back on the podium after too many races without that satisfaction. On Sunday, my bike slowed on the straight and I lost 20 lengths there every lap. I managed to make it back in the twisty bits, as my bike handled better than ever, and I was learning to better cope with the problem. When the red flag came out after 11 laps, I was right in the lead pack. Fifth is not what I wanted, but I know the team and I got the best out of the bike on the day”.

Martin knows Shubenacadie like the back of his hand. “I tested extensively there a few years ago, and I now know all the bumps and odd lines of the place. I am fit this year and ready to beat everyone!”

Mat McBride had the proverbial tough week end, with a few on-track incidents pushing him out of the lead group in virtually every race. “I was in the lead pack in the Saturday 600 race, until I was forced offline by a back marker. That killed my drive on the long straight and I lost the tow from the leaders. Fifth did not do justice to the bike or the team. On Sunday, I ran into a pool of water at the bottom of corner 2 and high sided out of the 600 race”.

The Superbike races meant more bad luck for Mat, with good starts followed by nasty encounters with back markers in both races. Shubenacadie is a physical track, just what Mat likes. “I am strong and fit, so fighting with the bike on a tight bumpy track is right up my alley. I can’t wait!”

La competition s’échauffe à Mosport. Chris Peris gagne en Sport Bike 600, alors que Chris et Francis Martin se méritent des 3ièmes places à moins d’une seconde de la victoire ! 

Le première programme double de cette saison au Championnat Superbike Parts Canada a été la scène le week end dernier des courses les plus serrées depuis longtemps, compliquées par une pluie intermittente le dimanche. Les victoires n’ont été décidées que dans les derniers 100 mètres pour trois des 4 principales courses au programme.

Les trois pilotes du Team Suzuki / Blackfoot / Picotte Racing ont fait belle figure à chaque mêlée, alors que Chris Peris gagnait la Sport Bike 600 le dimanche par une “énorme” marge de 2,75 sec. après 14 tours difficiles sur une piste détrempée, et ce après une belle 3ième place lors de la course du samedi, à un mince 0.316 sec du gagnant. Francis Martin se retrouva 3ième lors de la Superbike du samedi, à 0.460 sec du meneur au damier, et 5ième le dimanche, à une « énorme » 0.995 sec de la première marche du podium. Le cadet de l’équipe, Mat McBride, s’empressera d’oublier ses résultats, se voyant frappé par quelques malédictions mécaniques et concurrents plus lents à bord de ses motos de plus en plus au point.

Le patron, Pascal Picotte, se disait plus que satisfait des prestations de son équipe tout au long du week-end. « Nous sommes maintenant trois équipes dédiées chacune à un pilote, qui savent non seulement maximiser les performance de leur pilote respectif, mais qui forment aussi une grande équipe qui sait communiquer et partager les informations. Nous somme retournés aux réglages de 2007 pour la Superbike de Martin, et c'est le Francis agressif de ses années de championnat que l'on revoyait en piste. Mat McBride et son chef d'équipe, Dale Rathwell, on amené leurs deux machines au niveau des leaders, alors que Mat se méritait une 4ième place sur la grille Superbike. Il me semble cependant que la pression le rejoint en course, lorsqu'il se voit sur une moto gagnante et qu'il pousse un peu trop pour gagner la course tout de suite. Il s'améliore à chaque sortie et je m’attends à une victoire de sa part avant la fin de la saison. »

Chris, Peris, la vedette montante de l’équipe, a vécu quelques jours d’activités frénétiques, se battant tous les instants dans les groupes de tête à chaque sortie. « Je ne me suis pas amusé autant en piste depuis mes années amateur lorsque nous étions 50 en piste. Ce week-end, chaque course a vu un groupe de 4 ou 5 pilotes en bataille constante pour la victoire.” La course 600 du samedi se déroula à la faveur de Chris, du moins au début. Parti de la pole, il restait dans le groupe de tête et préparait sa stratégie pour le dernier tout, lorsque qu'un passage de rapport raté lui coûta la victoire.

Pour la course du dimanche, l'équipe décida de faire des changements important à la moto. « Pascal (Picotte) a tout changé et j'ai gagné presque facilement. J'en veux d'autres comme celle là, SVP ! »

En Superbike, un problème électrique lors de la Super Pole le relégua à la 9ième place sur la grille pour les deux courses. « Un bon départ le samedi me ramenait graduellement vers le peloton de tête avec 6 tours à compléter. Un pilote plus lent ruina ma sortie de virage avant le droit, et me relégua à la 5ième place au final. Le dimanche, un autre bon départ me placait 6ième après le premier tour et 4ième lorsque la course fut arrêtée prématurément après 11 tours. J'ai manqué de temps car je suis certain que j’avais la machine pour gagner. »

Chris connaît bien Shubenacadie, la piste où la cirque Parts Canada se retrouvera dans deux semaines. “Je vise deux victoires là bas – sur, sur.”

C'est un Francis Martin avec son agressivité d'antan que nous avons retrouvé sur cette piste qu'il affectionne particulièrement. « Après un vrai bon départ en Superbike le samedi, je planifiait ma stratégie afin de gagner cette course qui était nettement à ma portée. Après m’être fait tasser un peu par un pilote plus lent en sortie de virage, cette 3ième place me satisfait bien un peu, même si je visais la victoire. Le dimanche, ma moto connut des petits pépins électriques qui ne coûtaient environ 20 longueurs sur le droit. La moto collait tellement bien en virage que je réussissais à revenir sur le groupe de tête à chaque tour. J'apprenais à rouler de mieux en mieux malgré le handicap, lorsque le course fut arrêtée par la pluie après seulement 11 des 20 tours prévus. Je voulais plus qu'une 5ième , mais je sais aussi que je tirais le maximum de la machine.”

Martin connaît Shubenacadie mieux que sa maison. “Nous avons testé quelques jours à Shubie dans le passé, et je connais maintenant toutes ses bosses et petits trucs. Je suis en santé cette année et prêt à gagner!”

Mat McBride préfèrera oublier son week-end à Mosport, alors que quelques incidents en piste causèrent des pertes de contacts avec le groupe de tête dans chaque course. “J'étais avec les leaders pour la course 600 du samedi, jusqu'à ce qu'un pilote qui perdais un tour m'envoya temporairement hors piste. J'ai alors perdu le contact avec les leaders et c'en était fait pour la victoire. Le dimanche, je me suis retrouvé dans une flaque d'eau, qui me fit perdre l'adhérence, puis ce fut la catapulte à plus de 130 km/h.” Ouch !

La guigne continua à s'acharner sur Mat en Superbike. Une malencontreuse rencontre avec un pilote plus lent dans chaque course ruina ses chances de victoires le samedi comme le dimanche. “Je connais bien Shubenacadie, une piste éprouvante où ma force physique me vient en aide. Vivement Shubie!”
